THAT,UNKNOWN BARQUE.

THE PALLISER BAY AFFAIR. Various statements have been circulated iu Wellington since the officers of the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Kaipara reported to the Marine Department that a biirquo had been seen in a certain position oli" Pallispr Bay. Conjecture has been busy . with llio names of at least two vessels, but these early surmises proved incorrect. Yesterday the Marine Department received a telegram from tho Collector of Customs (Mr. J. Howe) at Gisborne concerning tho sighting of the barquo Helen, which left Timaru for Hobart on January 7, by the master of the Westport Coal Company's steamer Regulus. The telegram reads as follows:— "Master of Regulus reports having seen and spoken barquo Helen, ten. miles west of Stephens Island, at 5 p.m. Saturday. Several sails gone, but. apparently all . well. Probably this was the vessel sought for by tho Ilinomoa."
