LORD ISLINGTON'S " FURTHEST SOUTH."
STEWART ISLAND AND .SOUTHLAND. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Invcrcargiil} January 15. The Governor arrived at Invcrcargiil, and was welcomed by the Mayor and councillors 011 Thursday-evening. On Friday he vibited "the Bluff and Stewart Island, returning to town in the evening, and, on Saturday morning, visited Riverton and Winton. In the afternoon, in the presence of a largo crowd, he per-, formed the ceremony of turning tlie first sod of the Invercargill tramways, for which a loan of *£75,000 has been floated. In the evening he was entertained at a fublic conversazione. He remained in nvercnrgill to-day, and to-morrow morning will proceed to Dunedin, visiting Alataura and Gore en route. At Invercargill, the Bluff, Stewart Island, Riverton, and "Winton he was presented with addresses of welcome.
Though his visit was only a flying one, Lord Islington stated in his speeches that he had seen , enough to realise the great fertility and prosperity of Southland.
