ITEMS FROM WESTPORT.
9 (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Wcstport, November 2. James Syraonds, an old railway employee, was shovelling coal at the bins when a passing truck caught the handle of his shovel, thus throwing him down between two moving trucks. His back was broken, and he is in the hospital. A new hospital is to be opened at Donniston to-morrow. The Charleston Hospital has been closed. The German barque Marth Bockhahn has sailed for Yaps, Caroline Islands, ivia Sydney, with coal. The sum of £168 was raised by public subscriptions for the widow and family of James Finnerty, recently killed at a sawmill. The "White Star Football Club, which ■was disqualified during tho pleasure of the Dullor 'Rugby Union for failure to keep its engagements, has appealed to tho New Zealand Union. Tho Westpoit Waterside Workers' Union took a ballot on the proposal to join - tho New Zealand Federation of Labour (as represented by tho 'Trades Councils). Tim was: For, 4; against, 88. Tho Westport vratorsiders favour joining tho Miners' Federation of Labour; the Greymouth wharfmen take an opposite view.
