RAIL SERVICE: HUNTERVILLE. Huntsruille, March 23. '■ A meeting of settlors and towns* people last night filled Argyle Hall to overflowing, the object being to dis-"' cuss the action of the Minister for Railways in refusing, .to make Hunterville a stopping-place for the Main Trunk express. Mr. W. Meldrum, chairman of the Town Board, who presided, stated that it was desirable to delete political i feelings or parochial animus between Hunterville and Mangawcka. It was. a matter of vital importance to the district, as the stopping of the train would increase revenue and give readier access to one of the most important stock centres in the; North Island. Several others 6poke..in a..similar strain, and judging by the expressions of. opinion . the greatest dissatisfaction existed at such an important distributing central being overlooked. • . v ■ HOT SPRINGS. Auckland, March 28. The Helensville hot springs, situated at Parakai, about a mile from Helensville South railway station, were knowr and used by Maoris in older days, and later by the earl} , settlers. Thirty years.ago there .was..a primitive sort of bath, where anyone was at liberty to la.ve his limbs in the waters which welled up in tke'-wilderness, but it was not till live years ago that their claims were recognised by the Government, and a grant made for giving better- accommodation for the largely-increasing numbers who visited them. The building put up was a modest little affair,and has long been too small,, and last;' year the Helensville Domain Board, which administers the reserve on which ■ the springs are situated, secured a ■ grant, with which .they have put up' a fine swimming bath and added six to the number ; of private baths : . Chrlstchurch, March 23. Lord Plunket arrived this morning,., and went by. special .train to Rakaia. Thence he is motoring to' Barr Hill, Methven, and Mount Somers, and then to Ashburton, where he will be enter-' tained at-dinner to-night. He is having pleasant weather for the tour. Tha Hon. D. County Councils are being invited to furnish particulars of their insurance of workers'scheme, with a view to-the preparation of a comprehensive scheme of incorporation under which councils would do their own insuring. HOTEL FIRE. ~ : Dunedln, March 23. ' A serious fire occurred in the Victoria Hotel, Nasoby, last night. The hotel isowned by Mrs. Black,an d occupied by W. 'B. Allan. When discovered the fire had a> • very firm hold, and before it was sup« pressed the [interior had suffered verj" severely, only the kitchen, ■ billiardroom, and one bedroom escaping.
