His Excellency the Governor, accompanied by Captain Shannon and Mr. H. C. Waterfield, arrived from Christchurch yesterday morning. Admiral Sir Richard Poore has accepted the invitation of the Canterbury Jockey Club for himself and the officers of the flagship to be present at the autumn meeting at Riccarton next Monday and Tuesday. Mr. W. MT. M'Leod, an old resident of. Opunake, died last week, aged 74 years. He was the last survivor of. the historical Livingstone - expedition, and was one of the chief, mourners at the burial of Mrs. Livingstone on the Zambesi in 1862. He was left in charge ,of the expedition, and prior to his secession from it he was presented with a Bible by Miss-M'Kenzie, sister of Bishop M'Kenzie. Deceased had been in New Zealand since 1864, In order to commemorate - Lord Kitchener's visit to New the Hon. D. . The, funeral of the' late, Mr. D. L. Lux ford, which left the residence of his sister in Karori Crescent yesterday afternoon for. the Karori Cemetery, was largely. attended: Sir. Luxford was very well known, particularly in this district. He was a son of Mr. Wm. Luxford', an early settler in this pro-, vince. For some years deceased was engaged in journalism—on the "Evening Press" and the "Evening Post," and subsequently on the Nelson "Mail." He afterwards joined the staff of Mr. : J. A. Gilruth, then chief veterinarian, and latter, filled a similar position under Sir. C. J. Reakes, who succeeded Mr,, Gilruth. Prior-.to being promoted to t'he position of district agent at Napier recently, Mr. Luxford was for some time stationed at the Wallaceville laboratory. Deceased took a keen interest' in all forms of athletic sports. • He had been in indifferent health- for some time, and it was thought that - the change of climate would ..have benefited him.
