AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

THE CATHOLIC CLUB. SPORTS AT THE BASIN RESERVE. The local amateur athletic season, was brought to a close on Saturday afternoon, when a sports meeting under the auspices of the Catholic Club and Hibernian Society was held at the Basin Reser.ve. Fine weather, fayoured the gathering, which was attended by about 2000 people. The odd events— tug-of-war, jigs, etc. —rather militated against getting through the programme with punctuality, but the gaps between the events by no means meant dull moments. Taken on the whole, the authorities have every reason to be gratified with the results of their efforts. The running was good, both in the sprints and in -the longer distance events. Strickland, a Petone runner, was in. particularly fine form. Besides accounting; for the.looyds. race, he was just beaten in the ; - 220 yds. event by inches. Other notable performances were Hubbard's long jumping—2oft. . 8in!; the high jumping by M'Kay and M'Namafa, who from scratch did sft. Gin. ;' and. M'Kay's effort in the hop step and' jump, which measured out at 44ft. . 2in.

One of the most interesting events on the programme was the tug-of-war, which was contested by eight teamstwo of these consisting of man-of-war sailors, one of • stokers, one of marines, one of police ("Pioneer" team), one from Cable's foundry, and one from the Colonial Carrying Company.
