BOWLS.

WELLINGTON V. COMBINED CLUBS. A ONE-POINT WIN. The bowling event of Saturday was the annual fixture between the Wellington Club and representatives from all tho other city and suburban clubs. For this match tho parent olub had to produco 17 rinks (CS players) to play two-rink representations from the Victoria, Thorndon, Newtown, Hutt, Petone, Karori, and Kelburno Clubs, and one rink each from the Johnsonville, Te Hiwi, and Eastbourno Clubs. On such an occasion it has been customary for the combined. clubs to pick from amongst their very best , rinks, yet tho Wellington Club has contracted quite a habit of winning on the grand aggregate. Even the advantage of playing tho games on the home green does not give one club (which has to put 17 rinks on the green) the advantage over the cream of all the other clubs. Towards the end of the contest on Saturday it. looked very much like a win for tho visitors, but on the scores being totalled it was found that the Wellington Olub had squeezed home by a single point.

Tho closeness of the contest made the last two games to end very interesting. One lay between Orton Stevens (Hutt) an<l Neil . M'Lean (Wellington). Wellington was three up. with one head to go,'and. when Stevens had to play his' last, bowl : M'Lean' lay one. Hutt skip attempted to rake iV out (in which case he would have laid two), but.all he did was to narrowly miss taking lis own second shot out. . '

lhe last game to end-was. between Williamson (Kelburne) and Webb (Wellington), a game prolonged by the Wellington's skip's superb facility for making ; "dead " heads," of which art. he is the most capable exponent oh the Wellington green. His purpose was, of course, to secure a. head in which his own .bowls—the whole eight if' possible—lay round the jack, Kelburne having a lead. of. eight on the nineteenth head. ■ Webb only 1 managed to score ono on. the twentieth. . The last head was most interesting. - .Kelburne' lay the shot _ when Webb; witlk his' last bowl, took it out /and lay the shot. Williamson came down . 'with : a. firm shot, getting a lucky "wick"' took Webb clean out and lay the coveted shot. .

most signal _ defeat sustained by Wellington was in the two games against the ; Victoria Club.Ballinger,' who -had a very good team, went down badly to Hueston, (the ! biggest ™ O'f the .day), arid Churchward was thirteen down to Bary (26—13).
