AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
TO-DAY'S SPOUTS. .'-.; The. sports gathering to be held on the Basin Reserve this afternoon promises to eolipse any of a similar nature this season. Large fields will face the starter, and good finishes are expected. The ancient Irish war pipes will be played by Mr. P. Barry, in costume, for the first time in New Zealand. The tug-of-war will- provide: an interesting struggle. Teams from Cable's foundry, Drivers' Union,' and- Colonial. Carrying Company will enter. Mr. J. Doyle will, not in the capacity of judge., No.spiked or running shoes will be allowed. A bagpipe competition will-be inaugurated, and competitors will dance in costume. It is the intention of the committee to get. the events off punctual to time-table, so that no unnecessary ' inconvenience will be caused to onlookers. The Garrison Band will- render selections during the day.
