Mr. J. T. Hogan, JiJ , . for Wanganui, proceeded to Ohristchurch last night to attend the conference of leasehold members on the land question. The death occurred at the Cambridge Sanatorium. on Tuesday of Mr; W. 'Wight' Smith, for some years in business: in Wellington as a land and commission agent. The deceased was a brother of Jlr. J. Emau Smith, Eesident Commis? sioner of the Cook Group, ■ and Mr. Agnien Smith, of Wellington. The late Mr. Smith was for a number of years an enthusiastic member of the Thorndon Bowling Club, and his. death will be deplored by many throughout the Wellington" district ..'.'. Mr. Thomas Pratt, who recently died at Invercargill, had been closely identified with the town since 1864. For the first twenty years of residence in Invercargill the deceased was prominent in public life, having been a representative of Invercargill in the, Southland Provincial Council and"-a member of the Executive Government.
