LAWN TENNIS

' -; PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Tournament was commenced yesterday on tho Thorndon Club's courts, in weather which for tennis may be only described as abominable. The high wind prevailing affected the play a great deal, but considering the conditions a very good start was' made with the events. Hawkins sprang a surpriso by taking a sot oft Peacock, who played very steadily. Blair was very disappointing in his match against Swanston, only being able to secure two games. Wilson was superior to Weir. In the men's doubles, Webber and Hunter played up well against Swanston and Peacock, securing seven games altogother from tho well-known combination. In thp ladies' singles, Miss Wollwood fought Miss Numieley hard) and at one timo looked like ] taking a set, but Miss Numieley seemed to . get into her stride in tho second sot, and after three all she outclassed her opponent. ■ Her driving was splendid. But the greatest 1 surprissxof the day was when in the combined doubles, Brown and Miss Wolltvood dc- . foated Blair and Miss Nunneley. Blair was i not playing at his best, and Miss Nunneley's play appeared to be affected by the wind. Brown's smashing at times was splendid, and i all through he was ably backed up by his ■ partner. Men's Championship Singles.—First round: Peacock beat Hawkins, 6—3, 2—6, 6—2; Swanston beat Blair, 6—l, 6—l; Wilson beat Weir, 6—o, I—6, 6—3. Combined Championship Doubles. —First round: Brown and Miss Wollwood beat Blair and Miss Nunneley, 6—3, 3—6, 6—2. JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS. A surprise was caused by A. G. Duncan, of Pctono, who put up a splendid performance against Lawrence, beating him, 6—3, 4—6, 6 —2. Condition and an effective servico in an awkward wind appeared to bo his winning assets. Jones's disposal of Clarke, 6 —3, 6—o, make his chances of reaching the final pretty rosy. Ho did not play up to best form though, and his tennis was not characterised by his usual activity and bustle. Sheppard had a trying timo against Mills (Thorndon). The latter played a very neat game in the second set, which ho won, 6—3, and tho last hurdle was approached very gingerly by Sheppard. Ho went for. place, and wore the Thorndonito down. Mills finished tamely, and only took one game. Sampson and Herd had tough work to settle Lawrence and Duncan.- The first set was a vantage one, and tho second much evencr than the scores indicate. Tho surpriso of the day was Howden and Wright's line win against Jones and Lewis. The Muritai- pair proved "quite a superior combination, and their volleying was much above that usually encountered in junior tennis. Miss Turton is through to the semi-final in tho ladies' singles. She had a three-set match with Miss Howard, who appealed to have command of tho situation at the termination of tho second set. Miss Turton had been doing all the running about, but though evidently distressed, sho succeeded in annexing the final set, 6-^3. Miss W. Low defeated Miss Crcasey after a long "two-setter." Tho former does not usually play singles, but pluckily decided to contest every • event. Miss Creasey is one''of the most improved juniors in tho city, and has a nice cross-court drive. Her servico, though, is a decided weakness. Tho winner was outclassed by Miss Turton in tho next round, though sho worked hard all tho time. No games took place in tho ladies' doubles, and only one in- tho combined. Jones and Miss F. Low defeated T. Maun sell (a well-known Wairarapa sport), and Miss Creasey in two sets. Tho latter pair led s—l in tho first set/but their opponents ultimately made their' subsequent win, pretty certain, by taking it at B—6.
