Shortly after crossing tho equator on February 24, the Eakaia exchanged signals with the Bteamer Tokomr.ru, bound for Auckland, reports tho "Otago Daily Times." Tho latter vessel was eventually left far astern, but apparently shortpTiod her passage by going much farther soutn, because she passed TaTaroa Heads last Thursday afternoon, and arrived at Auckland at 0.30 am. on Monday. On passing the Nuggets the Tokomaru hoisted the signal "ltokaia," and subsequently "Have you seen?" was hoisted, but tho two signals were not read in conjunction at the time, and the Rakaia was erroneously reported as nearing the heads. When the vessel steamed northwards, notes were compared, and it was surmised that the vessels had spoken each, other, and that the Tokomaru was anxious to know if the Rakaia had reached port first. A DETERMINED CAPTAIN. When a trawier gets ashore on tho treacherous coasts of Iceland it generally happens that it is the end of her. A satisfactory exception to this rule is afforded by the case of the Grimsby trawler Buffalo, which went ashore but was refloated, and has been brought safely back to Grimsby. It appears that during gales the Bimalo Btrandcd at lteykjanaes, on a dangerous, rocky coast. The crew left in the small boat for the land, but the skipper refused to accompany them. After some hours .hard work, alternately in tho stokehold and engincroom, he got tho vessel off on tho rising tide. For over three hours he navigated the vessel searching for the crew. He found them at length drifting out to sen. But for tho presence of mind and determination of tho skipper the Buffalo would in all probability have been lost. It is .stated that the Grimsby owners regard tho stoppers action as worthy of tho highest praise. PASSENGERS FOR ENGLAND.
