The Rand "Mail" censures tho Mozambique- agreement on the ground that it will imperil tho finances of South Africa's own railways and, ports, and cause instability of trade. London, April 6. Mrs. Marie Cridland, a, daughter of tho Chief Justice of Queensland (Sir R. A. Cooper), sued her aunt, Sirs. Sabina Cooper, a wealthy lady, for slander, and for an inquiry as to her sanity. Tho aunt reflected on Mrs. Cridiand's"moral character ' Plaintiff was awarded a farthing damages. Each sido was ordered to pay its own costs. A MISTAKE. London, April 6. Cablegrams have been sent from Wellington, New Zealand, condoling with Mr. AY. Crooks, Labour member for Woolwich, on the death of a man of the samo name on tho steamor Penguin. The man lost, however, was not related to Mr. Crooks. TELEPHONE RATES. Melfcourne, April 7. Tho Employers' Federation has protested against the now telophono rates, and has urged that the raising of the rates should be deferred till Parliament has had an opportunity of investigating the 1 balauce-slieet of the telephone system. DEPREDATIONS OF SHARKS. Sydney, April' 7.
