MUNICIPAL MARKET.

ADELAIDE ROAD SITE REJECTED. .It was proposed at last night's iiieeting of tho City Council by Councillor HihdmarslV: "That the old tramways site, Adelaide Road, be set aside for a market." The mover stated that the site, might not, be an ideal onb for the purpose, but it Was central. That a market was desirable went, ho thought, without saying. The City Engineer in his report was decidedly in iavour of the establishment of markets. Markets were- a success, in..Melbourne and Sydney, and lie did not see why they should not be a success here. There niight'be sbmo prejudice against the market at first, but it would soon be found that poor and rich would patronise it alike. If tho market were established in Adelaide Road,, it would cause a rise in value of property thereabouts. Of late years no attempt had been' made to start a market in New Zealand.. Inspection of goods could be carried but properly at a market. All ho asked the council to do at tho. present time was to sfet aside the site for the purpose. ' ' ■ i Seconding tho motion, Councillor M'Larcii expressed the opinion that a market in Wellington would be well patronised. Only a simple structure was required for the purpose. Councillor Luke held that a market ill Adelaide Road would be so far from the wharves aftl railway that cartage on goods would bo very heavy. Councillor Shirtcliffo was of opinion that a market would not be a success hero. Unless tho farmers themselves could be brought into tho market no advantage would accnie. Cbiliicillor Smith thought the proposed site was unsuitable. People at the Thdrndon end of the towii required a market just as milch as residents at Newtown. After Tufther discussion the proposal was negatived by eleven votes to three, the arcs being Councillors Fletcher, Hmdmarslv and M'Laren.
