RUGBY FOOTBALL.
Already there are signs of activity among Rugby playors throughout tho city, and, for tho last two or. threo Saturdays, Miramar has been very much alivo with players aiixious to get into form for tho opening of tho season. Although tlio championship matches will not start for a week or two, rivalry between tho clubs is finding an outlet at .tlio Athletic Park this afternoon, when Ponokemcet Oriental in a spceial challenge match, the proceeds of which are to go towards the erection of gymnasiums which tho two clubs have already made a start with. Quito a number of representative players well known to followers of the game are included iu the teamsßoberts, Mitchinson, Matheson, Shadbolt, Perry, Calcinai, Gardner, Trezise. and Tilyard. Mr. W. J. Wallaco has agreed to referee. During Easter, Christchurch Albion plays Poneke, and Melroso play a team from Wanganui, both games being played on tho Park 011 tho Saturday afternoon.' .The union is prompting a soven-a-sido tournament on March 17, the proceeds c;i which are to go to the players' accident fund, and it is hoped to provide games of more than ordinary interest to followers of tho winter sport.
