After a lifetime of public service Mr. John Eastliam, solicitor, for over fifty years town clork of Clitheroe, has died in his eightvfourth year.

A member of the crew of the Newfoundland schooner Lolita A arrived in Liverpool recently en route for St. John's, and was received-at the Sailors' Home, where ho related a story of a narrow escape. His ves-sel,-bound from Oporto to St. John's, in ballast; encountered heavy north-west gales some 500 miles from Newfoundland, and was dismasted on the night of December 15. An ablo seaman named Mayer, was washed overboard, but was able to seize a rope hurriedly •thrown', and was recovered. Under a jury mast the schooner drifted for six days in imminent peril, but was then fallen in with •by the Norwegian steamer Kronprins Olav, which' sent her lifeboat and rescued all aboard, -They were landed at Hamburg, ;and .-.thence proceeded to Liverpool pending arrangements for being sent home.
