Tho remaining clauses of Mr. Purdie's scheme for the grading of teachers wcro passed by_tho Board of Education to-day in tho following form:— (1) That in such classified list the inspectors omit tho names of all head teachers who inform tho board of their wish not to bo graded; that_ in such classification, and in tho classification of assistants as indicated in the resolution, tho Chief Inspector shall have a deliberative and, if necessary, a casting vote, and that each of tho other inspectors shall have a deliberative vote.

(2) That the inspectors also arrange in order of morit the names of all teachers who aro eligible as assistants' in_ positions as stated hereunder: —(a) an assistantship entitling him to a salary of grade 1 or 2 in

schools of grades 4, 5, and 6; (b) an assist ant-ship entitling him to a salary of grade 1 or 2 in schools of grade 7 and upwards; (c) an assistantship entitling him to a salary of grade 3 or 4; (d) an assistantship entitling him to a salary of grade 5, 6, or 7, (3). That the grades of salaries referred to in resolution 5 be those defined in the second part of the first schedule of the Act to amend the Education Act, 1908. (4) That in determining the relativo position of teachers duo attention be given to teaching skill, length of service, and academical attainments, and that marks bo awarded for each of these as follow:—For teaching skill, 70 per cent, of the maximum; for length of service, 10 per cent, of the maximum (full marks to bo given for twenty years' serried); for academical attainments, 20 per cent, of tho maximum. (5) That should a teacher from any other education district apply for a vacant position, his place in tho classified list bo determined from the evidence submitted. (6) That tho board's inspectors be instructed to have the grading made at next midwinter, and that it be revised every two years thereafter.
