PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

The annual meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children is to be held next Tuesday evening, when the society's report will be presented, and speeches will be delivered by Dr. Agnes Bennett, the Rev. J. 11. Glasson, Rev. W. A. Evans, Mr. J. G. W. Aitken, M.P., and Mr.. A. It. Atkinson. In the course of a year this society gets through a great deal of quiet and very useful work, and its very existence is often a check on evil-doers. . The report shows that during the ! eleven years of its existence 662 cases have come' before the society. There wore 64 new cases during the past year. In 40 cases last year the society obtained advice from the honorary solicitors. The committee expresses its satisfaction at the fact that the work of providing a home for the training and care of mentally defective boys is- in progress, and it hopes that Government will make similar provision for 'mentally defective girls. Some 630 letters were written by the secretary'and 288 letters were received. The secretary paid 105 visits, and 447 visits were, made to the office. ■ Subscriptions and donations to the society for the year totalled £88. The expenditure was £101 9s. 4id. There is still a balance in hand of £46 Is. ll£d. A sum of £57 12s. 6d. was collected for the Society for the Promotion of-'the Health of Women and Children, and £31 18s. lid. was expendedin the new work. The balance (£25 3s. 6d.) has been, handed to the new society.
