CHURCH UNION.

VIEWS OF BISHOP JULIUS. ARCHDEACON HARPER ON THE STUD!' OF HISTORY. (BT TELEGRAPH—PItESS ASSOCIATION.) Chrlstchurch, October 21. At the Anglican Synod Conversazione last night Bishop Julius, who presided, made a strong : plea ,on -behalf of Christian unity, ■pointing to-the results of the Lambeth Conference in proof of the depth and sincerity of the-sentiment at Home on the question of reunion. He said it would not be effected in a day, nor could it be contrived by various denominations meeting on .a common platform, shaking hands, and calling one another br.other, and then going outside and doing their, best to cut one another's throats. In theso days, when .they understood the real principle of chiirchmanship, they were more ready than ever to extend tho right hand of fellowship to their brother, hastening forward the day when all who loved the Lord Jesus Christ_ would .bo joined'together'in brotherly friendship and love. - Archdeacon Harper (who, the bishop stated, was just about to complete the fiftieth year of his priesthood) referred to .the necessity of impressing upon the young sound principles of Church history, and said it was amazing that in a country so enlightened as New Zealand the study of history was forbidden in ,the primary; and secondary schools. .One means of bringing about something 'like union between the different members 'of Christ's body' was 'the calm, 'dispassionate, and ; intelligent study of the glorious history: of th.e past. Thus they would perceive where they had diverged, and' wherein lay the. possibility of reconciliation.
