YACHTING.
, ' (By Main-sheet.) ■ . • COMING -EYENItj. ;Eeb. 15;— Handicap ; races for Ist, 2nd, and ' ' 3rd'class yachts.
-Yachting-lias been a favourite evening pastime during tho week, but littlp-of interest 'has transpired.. There was no racing on Saturday last, and on Sunday the weather >as'not siic.h. as to''tempt'yachtsmen.' ,< The racing weather under which yachts have competed this season has mado apparent tho necessity of a good wholesome typo of heavy-weather. boat, and it is to be hoped that anyone intending' to build for next season -will .not. forget , to. take. count of this fact. : • v Mr. Millman's boat now in course of construction' should be a fine type'for this harbour; She will be 23ft: over-all, with fairly deep sections, and, with about ItewVof load on keel,'which would mako her a safe littlo craft.. - As usual, Mr.' Millma'u is designing his .own boat and: putting, all the bonefit of his. past experience'; into, the. work. . ■ ' Last week seems to have been one' of those weeks when ■everything goes wrong in yacht■:ing. ' Mr. W. Hales 'had the hard"'luck to i get jammed ;in Martin Hay, and fouled the trading schooner Norseman,.with the i*csult that the Atlanta's sail is ruined, having 'beeji ripped ; froni. luff . tO;'leach' by tho 'Norseman's bowsprit'.
, The' Ngaira ondeavourcd, to do the same trick, and ripped her jigger on tho White Wings.
There is a movement , on foot to have a Club outing on' February 22, to which all yachts and launches are invited. It is hoped that all will attend, and bring their" friends and their own'afternoon tea. '
Oil' Sunday last Mr. Freeman's'catboat did quite an American thing—sailed under. She is a grand little boat, and should stand somo heavy weather, but still those on board could explain tho peculiar position iVhich upset her equilibrium a lot better than : the casual observer, who is always ready and -willing to, tell a man what lie should have done.
The Petrel distinguished herself by charging the concrete wall at the breakwater on Sunday. The result was a broken stick and a day's sail spoiled. There will be races for Ist, 2nd, and 3rd class to-day, and it is. to bo hoped the weather will be a little more considerate than heretofore.
Mr. Arthur Holmes has christened his new boat tho Nanoya. -
