A SAILING RECORD—LYTTELTON TO KAIPARA. A tramp steamer would bo praised if her. engines had been induced to propel her over 578 miles in 18 hours, averaging 12.25 miles per hour: in fact (says the "Lvttelton Times"), tho record is not too leisurely lor some passenger vessels. As a record for a coasting barquentmo, however, it is highly meritorious.

The passage from Lyttelton to Ivaipara is just 0./8 miles, and the barqucutiuc Aratapn, owned uy Mr. W. Cook of Lyttclton, and commanded by Captain Renme, recently accomplished the journey, 111 the time mentioned. She left Lyttclton at 7 p.m. oil Thursday, Januirrv 16, and by the same time on Saturday, January 18, th:- vessel'was off the Kaipara Heads, the passage. being made, at an average speed of 12.25 knots per hour. The time is easily a record for the distance, the next best being that made by the schooner Eliza I'irtli, which did the journey in- 52 hours.'
