THE FRIENDLY DOOR.
“The door of my room is a friend of long standing. He’s there between me and the draught of the landing; He shuts out the darkness, the rain and the gloom, Shutting in happiness and warmth to my room. It’s his sturdy figure that faces the blow Of kind neighbors coming, the slam when they go; But the sound I love best —and which makes me feel better — Is the loud bang-bang and the thud of a letter. There’s only one person who writes every week, Only one letter I press to my cheek In fierce, aching gladness, though short the line be — ’He’s safe and quite happy, my hubby 3.t SGB-! * Yes, the door of my room is a friend of long standing; It's there between me and the dark, empty landing. I feel as if hubby would laughingly say: 'Close her in, door, with memories while I’m away.’ ”
