Mr Rose, an electrical engineer from Rhodesia, who is on a- visit to this district, was the guest of Mr Robt. Bowio last week on a- tour of tho Lakes district. On his return Mr Rose, in conversation with our reporter, was loud in his praise of tho charm and beauty of tho scenery ot the Southern Lakes. He was amazed at the variety of scenery in such a comparatively small area as Now Zealand. With respect to our own particular district he thought the good quality of the stock was surprising in view of the apparent scarcity of grazing in Central Otago. New Zealanders, he said, seemed to bo very much football and wrestling minded while in Rhodesia, tennis, cricket and polo are the main sports all the year round, and are played mostly in the evenings on account of the long daylight. “Everywhere I have travelled,” said Mr Rose, “I have found everyone most anxious to show me their district and most hospitable. Tho Maori question seems always to crop up when speaking to South Africans and there is no comparison between our coloured races. Tho Maori is a much superior and more intelligent individual and wo recognise him as being an equal with ourselves but we could not possibly do | this with our natives. Your mining interested me as gold mining is so dif- , ferent from diamond mining and your th o new dredges operating and one under course of construction are very evident signs of prosperity iu the district.”
