Vincent County Council

The ordinary monthly mooting of the Vincent County Council, held in tho Council Chambers, Clyde, on Monday last, was attended by Crs. J. Ritchie (chair), S. A. Stevens, C. Weaver, A. C. Scoulur, i. J. Partridge, and D. Lrguiiart. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Crs. "N ay lor and Butcher. Before commencing the meeting the chairman referred to the trade©' at the Lowburn bridge, and expressed sympathy with the relatives of the two vouug men who were drowned and also with the contractor. The loss of the two young men had caused a great gloom over the district. The chairman also referred to tho deaths of two well-known residents m tho persons of Mr J. 11. Keddell and Mr F. Perkins. Both hud at all times been willing to assist at patriotic functions and their loss would lie felt in the district. He proposed a motion of sympathy with the relatives and this was carried by the memliers j standing in silence. The Estimates for the year 1937-30 as submitted were approved. The chairman stated that owing to the increased wages and materials, and also the necessity for paying for the two bridges at Omakan and Lowburn it would lie necessary to increase the rates slightly this year. A motion was carried striking a general rate of lid in the £ for the current vear. The increase in the rate will bring a sum of approximately , £ f joo. . The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read and dealt with as under. The Lowburn School Committee wrote thanking the council for the Coronation donation. —Received. J. R. Hughes, Alexandra, applied for permission to use a lorry of a gross load of 7I tons over class 3 roads.—G ranted.

W. H. Waddell, Clyde, applied for permission to erect a further petrol pump in the town of Clyde. Permission had been granted by tho Bureau of Industry.—Granted under the usual conditions.

J. Me D. Stevenson, Makarora, applied for the council ,to erect a stock swfng bridge over the Wilkin river. Tho Lake Council wTote on the same subject, as it was on the boundary line lie twee u tho two counties.—lt was decided that tho Engineer and Lake County Inspector visit and make a joint report. A. L. Mead, Lake Hawea, advised that ho had completed portion of a track to Taylor’s run and requesting a progress payment and also an extension of time as the ground had been frozen during the winter months. Engineer stated that he had inspected the work and recommended a progress payment of £IOO. —It was decided that the amount be passed for payment and the lime extended for 3 months.

J. A. Johnstone, Nevis, applied for payment for work for three men tor one day on the Carrick Range in September, 1935. The chairman stated that the work had not been authorised, and similar work had been done by other people on other occasions without payment.—The request was declined.

The Dunedin City Corporation forwarded statement of heavy traffic fees for half year ended 31st May, 1937. Tho council had collected and had been, allotted £338. The Wanaka Progress League requested tho Council to assist them te obtain a landing ground for aircraft iu the district. The previous ground had been condemned.—The Engineer stated that ho had visited a suggested ground, with the Public Works Department's engineer, near tho Hawea bridge, and a report was being made by the Department.—lt was decided to write to the Minister to expedite the matter.

Uago Central Electric Power Board wrote with respect to the Council’s request for a reduction iu charges for street lighting, that tho charge was based 011 a flat rate of £3 for each light and that with the iiicreavis in wages and cost of material, it could not see its way clear to reduce tho ehargo. The Chief Postmaster wrote advising that the Department was prepared to pay half cost of installation of light in the private box lobby at the Lost

’Office at Bannockburn. It was presumed that the council would carry out the work and that the Departtnen’s total indebtedness would be jC? 2s bd.—lt was decided to pay half the cost.

Omakau Progressive League forwarding schedule of eight lights which the council had agreed to erect in Omakau.—lt was agreed to instruct tbe Power Board to iustal tho necessary lights. Omakau Progressive League wrote requesting the Council to consider the question of Barking areas in the township and also the construction of an island plot at the junction ot Harvey. Street with the main highway.—The council was not prepared 'in the meantime to allocate anyparking areas, and that the matter of tire island be taken up with tiie Main Highways authorities. F. J. Williams, Dunedin, forwarded a plan of proposed subdivision of part section 7, Block 1. Tiger Hill Survey District, which was to be transferred to the Otago education Board, and which the chief surveyor required it to be treated as a township under the Lands Act.—Approved providing that internal roads be formed and gravelled.
