WANAKA NOTES
(From Our Own Correspondent.) j I At Pembroke on Wednesday last , the combined Tarras-Pembroke schoolboy Loam defeated Cromwell schoolboys by 15 points to nil. The combined backs proved superior U> the ; Cromwell backs. Tries for the winners were scored by Phillips (2), Winders (2), and Mannix. At basketball Cromwell defeated the combined Tarras-Pembroke team by 20 to 12. The annual match between Mahcno and Wanaka will be played at Maheno on the 28th inst. A man named Colin MeL aren, aged 78, was .found dead on Wednesday last. Deceased was born in Australia but for the greater part of his life ho lived in the Matukituki, and for the past year in Pembroke. Deceased was unmarried and is survivedby two brothers, Messrs A. and 11. McLaren of Nelson. The funeral look place 011 Friday after a service in St. Andrew’s Church. The St. Andrew’s Women’s Club 1 hbld a handkerchief afternoon at the Manse last Thui-sday when many pretty handkerchiefs were handed in. The competition, ‘Guessing the names «f Animals,’ which was drawn by the different members caused a great deal of laughter. Mrs 0. Morris was the winner. The other competition. l ‘Names of N.Z. Towns,' was won byMrs T. Anderson. A play, ‘The Lovely Miracle’ was read by Mesdamos Cardno, Mauson, ]. Mac Kay, Scott and Miss Urquhart. Afternoon tea brought this pleasant function to a close
Mrs J. S. Hunt returned to Maungawera on Wednesday.
Mr D. Campbell loft on Thursday for Wellington to see the first- test match.
Mr and Mrs S, Fauiks, Mr and Mrs D. MoLeod, and Mr and Mrs N. F. Seaife were in Christchurch for the Grand National. Messrs McLeod and Fauiks crossed to Wellington for the first test match on Saturdav.
