UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM
PROVISION FOR SINGLE MEN. Having completed his task of providing rotational full-time employment for 7000 married men throughout the Dominion, the Minister of Labour (Mr P. (’. Webb) is now giving serious attention to the problem of finding suitable .jobs for single men registered as unemployed. The Minister said to-day that he hoped that very shortly there would he a considerable number of men employed on farm development work in the North Island. There were many thousands of acres of Crown lands suitable for settlement, which needed breaking in, and the Government was now considering the question of organising camps on the same lines as I Public Works Gamps, with the idea of 1 absorbing a number of men in the creation of national assets. The whole scheme, Mr Webb added,
I would be reviewed on the return of I the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) j when all the Ministers would be able ' to give further attention to the prob- • kmi. Unfortunately, the South Island ' did not offer the same opportunities
for land development .-is the North
; r.sland and tin* ipiestion of irrigation j would receive added consideration on 1 that account. t
