Lake County Council

At last meeting of the Lake County Council the following business of interest in the Wauaka district .was transacted: F. B. Dean, Pembroke, advised that the drain mentioned by the .TounciJ had been cleaned out and that the material for same had been ordered. —Received. F. J. Norris, Pembroke, applied for a right to run a water pipe for domestic use across Brownston Street to Section (j and 10, Blk 2$. —Granted. J. Cooksey, Cromwell, enclosed copy of application being made to tho Court for a prospecting license over 11 acres of land situate at the junction of the Kawarau river and Roaring Meg Creek.—Approved. It was decided to spend up to ,£3O 011 protection works, to save further flood damage to the road to tho Niger Hut, Matukilifki. CARDRONA RIVER ROAD DEVIATION. Considerable discussion look place regarding tho Cardrona River Road deviation in relation to the negotiations with Mr P. R. Sargood. The gist of this was that the chaTrinaii had ucen authorised to confer with Mr Sargood, and as a result the Council lipd intended spending the sum of £6O in improvements to the mad, such improvements to lie earned out in cooperation with work intended to be done by Mr Sargood. However, Mr Sargood subsequently put counter proposals to the Council which it could not accept ; and as the Council did not recognise any liability in respect of Mr Sargood's water rights, it could not see its way to go any further in the matter. As regarded Mr Sargood’s suggestion that the matter should be submitted to arbitration, the Council could see no ground for this. Finally it was resolved that—“As this Council cannot see there is any matter to refer to arbitration,, and as all conciliatory methods have apparently failed, Mr P. R. Sargood be written to informing him that this Council does not recognise any responsibilitJL regarding his water race inlets; nevertheless, no objection will be offered to the roadway being crossed with race subject to an application being made to the Council and the work carried out to the satisfaction of the County Inspector.” Percy F. Smith, Vauxhali.f Dunedin, wrote complaining of the injustice done ratepayers by the action of the Lake County Council in withdrawing permission to remove the fallen branches and cones from the plantation in the Cardrona Valley. The complaint made to the Council in rc-^ 1 gard to this matter was due to personal reasons on the part of the persons concerned. Commercially, the trees in the', Nursery were valueless, and it would he better if they were all rlcmoved and other trees planted in their stead.—lt was resolved that the malt-' ter of disposing of sonic of the trees, either standing or cut, be left in tho hands of the Inspector.—‘Mail.’
