Mining

' MATA KAN Ul DISTRICT. The Matakauui district is now proving to be of much interest to botli the miner and the mining speculator, as some very encouraging returns are being won there. Messrs Harper and E. Tohill, of this district, have now been for some time working in the old Undaunted Company’s claim, and they have had as much as one ounce per hour Avliile working, and on the bottom it is a very poor prospect that does not show one pennyweight or better to the dish. These two men deserve much j credit for tlie enterprise they displayed j for, before they could commence operj a Hons, they had to pump out a hole (50 | feet deep, covering almost an acre of | ground. They were not men of wealth, ■ and had to acquire a motor and pump ' with what little cash they had, and , had to run the motor night day ; for fifteen days to de-water the hole. Ft can be seen that this was no small tiling, and was not done without a considerable expense as to oil and petrol IT is pleasing to see that they have been rewarded for their courage, and it is now understood that they havc been offered live thousand pounds for their property. Prospective buyers are at present working the claim with them. The old doej) lead is also taken up by Mr T. C. Donnelly, who intends to pump it out. It will be remembered by the old hands that the Deep Lead stopped work due to a slip coming in to the paddock off the hillside. All the plant is still in the paddock, including an elevator, boxes, etc., as there was then no time, to remove anything. It is believed that there are round about forty ounces of gold to be washed up in the old boxes. The Verdun ( ompany is also working under the management of Mr Felix Donnelly. Most of the ground has been taken up in the vicinity of the claims mentioned.

A Dunedin party, Messrs I?. Hogan and W. Robertson, have taken up some ten acres adjoining Messrs Harper and To hill’s Haim, and they have now arrived hack in the district and were all ready to commence working their ground last Monday morning. This is not suitable ground for the unemployed miner, as it is all deep and requires engines and pumps, etc., to work it. Mr O. W. Magnus has also taken up ne acres, and it is understood that ms ground is to be worked in conjunction with Messrs Hogan and Robertson ’s.
