Mining

There appears to have been a general revival during- the past week in pegging-out on the Cromwell Flat. The Racecourse Trust has received notice on behalf of several well-known Dunedin residents of their intention to enter and peg areas on the racecourse reserve. A section of the reserve had been previously pegged. Thflf aim of the recent meeting in connection with damming lakes Hawoa and Wanaka, seems to be to urge Iflbo Government to proceed with the permanent structures, on Hawea particularly, for this winter. That is the impression formed after listening to the remarks of the various speakers. One would need to be an optimist indeed to anticipate such a work being cafiried out in the time under the Government control. To our mind it would, be enough to expect it to be completed in .1934. We were under the impression that temporary structures to control the water this season were aimed at. /vt Hawea, such a structure does not appear to offer any great obstacles. If it could be done it wouldj under ordinary winter conditions, enable the miners on the Molyneux to work a much lower level than last year, and some wonderful yields would follow. That would give a strong hand in forcing the Government to take up the proposals on both lakes. It will be a great surprise if anything of a I permanent nature is completed before the depths of winter. The appeal case, Bell v lames Goodger and The Lady Ranfurly Company, in connection with a claim on the Ivaviarau river has been set down for hearing in Dunedin on March loth. The application for the dam in the Kawarau river below the Arrow will come before the Wardens Court at Queenstown on Tuesday. An option to purchase Mr Win. Murray’s tunnelling claim at Scotland’s Beach. Kawarau Gorge, was secured by Mr T. L. Stewart WrigjiftJ of Cromwell, last week, on behalf ofl Mr J. A. Roche, of Dunedin. Mr Murray’s claim is situated between the claims of Messrs Bell and Kilgour and that of Bell and Party, and indications point to a continuation of the* same lead as that on which Bell and 'Kilgour are working running through* Murray’s claim where some very excellent prospects have already been washed. It is generally believed that! Mr Roche, who already haß an option over Bell and Kilgour’s claim, hats now a most valuable asset.
