Cromwell Borough Council

A special meeting of the above, held on Wednesday evening:, was attended by the Mayor (C. \Y. J. Roberts), Crs. Bell, Betts, BroWn, Orr, Partridge, and Grant.

The Mayor outlined the business of the meeting. Advice had been received that particulars of all works proposed within the "borough, under the No. 5 Unemployment Scheme, up til! 30th September, must be scut forward before the end of the week. Tho chairman of the various committees outlined works which could reasonably be undertaken and these were of a varied nature.

A motion was carried approving of the works outlined by the various committees.

The next question discussed was that of an assistant to the Town Clerk. The Mayor referred to the heavy increase in work by reason of the operations of the No. 5 scheme. The committee was not only operating for the town but also for numerous bodies throughout the district. Although 81 registrations had to be handled, only 14 of these were within the borough. It was quite evident that assistance must be given to cope with the work.

On being asked to express an opinion the clerk said that if the council appointed an assistant, the appointment could be as secretary of the Unemployment Committee, and he could retire from the committee. If on the other hand he was granted an increase, he could appoint his own assistant.

The clerk retired and the council fully discussed the position.

A motion was carried that Miss Stephens be appointed temporary assistant for one month at a salary of £t per week, and that the position be thereafter advertised. An amendment was that the town clerk be voted an increase in salary of £52 per annum, and engage his own assistant, during- the period of secretaryship of the Unemployment Board.—This was defeated by the motion.

In connection with the salary it was considered equitable that the local bodies deriving benefit from the scheme should bear an equal share of the cost. It was decided to' interview the county chairman on the matter. Tho meeting- closed with the usual vote to the chair.
