COUNTY WAGES.
At the January meeting of the Vincent County Council it was decided, owing to the economic depression, and the consequent poor prospects of the rates coming in, to reduce the wages of the staff and workmen. The county engineer-clerk was reduced from to the road inspector to -£'7s> a"d t" e gang men and county daymen to 12s per day. The position was to be reviewed in three months time, and this was done in committee at last Thursday's meeting. The chairman announced that while there was every necessity for the most rigid economy, the position was better than was anticipated and the commiittee ' recommended—That the engineer's salary of £.A7$ be reduced by 10 per cent; the inspector (who had b'/jn severely reduced three months ago), increased by .£2=;. and that the workmen be brought into line with the Public Works Department and be increased by 6d per day.
