Cromwell Golf Club

The annual general meeting of the above was hold on Thursday evening, wnen 15 members (12 gents and three ladies) were present. Mr Jas. C. Parceil was in the chair. The annual report and balancesheet was read and adopted. The report was as follows; Vour committee has much pleasure in reporting that the club has again experienced a very successful season. W lien the country generally is in the throes of difficult times, the stress is often very strongly felt by sports clubs and such like institutions. The roll of membership clearly indicates the fascination that: the game of go'f has lor its devotees when it is oboorv ;d the only defections are muse made necessary by members leaving <he district. The achievement,s jot the club at home and abroad have been meritorious and the winners of the Championships both deserve; the greatest credit. The congratulations of (die club are to be extended to Mr Er. Jolly in his fourth successive win of the men’s Championship, and to Mrs Blacklcr in her win in the Ladies’ Championship. Mr Scheib’s effort in capturing- the Bradley Shield was a very popular one indeed, and the congratulations of the club are to he extended to him on his winning the coveted prize. Match; Alexandra 15, Cromwell 3. 2ml August. 1930. —Alexandra at Cromwell. Cromwell 10, Alexandra 5. 16 th August, 1930.— Clyde at Cromwell, Cromwell Ladies 4*. Men 7-i ; Clyde Ladies 2, Men 7. 20th September, 1930. —Clyde at Clyde. Cromwell Ladies 2, Men 4 : Clyde Ladies 2. Men 7. In outside Tonrmunents, the club was unfortunate in 'not being so well represented as usual owing to the tournament dates not being suitable to many members. Mrs Paterson,

however, upheld the honour of the club hy winning the open tournament at Queenstown, on the 3rd June. The attendance at' local matches was very good throughout the vcar, the average number being approximately 21. Throughout the (season, the links were kept in very good order and condition and some very fine scores were returned. A great deal of improvement was effected in the surface of the links by the use of tlio clod crusher. The committee wish to express to Mr Smith their thanks for his excellent suggestion ami assistance in this matter. Crowding again was very much in evidence and in accordance with the powers given them, the committee got in touch with the Cromwell Development Company with a view to getting the use of an extra piece of land. Negotiations were delayed for a long time owing to the absence of Mr Sargood from Now Zealand. At present the committee is in receipt of an offer from Mo Cromwell Development Company in which the Company offers the club the use of the lands in •-onsideration of the dub planting 5 chains of trees each year and enclosing them with a rabbit proof fence.

The committee has seen fit to aeeepl this offer, an steps have been taken to get the enlargement nf the 'inks under war.

During the year, a special general meeting' was held and it was decided at the mooting that the club should affiliate with the .New Zealand Coif Association. The only other matter of constitutional importance during the season was the formation of the Otagd Central local governing body for the control of tournaments, and play in ft is hoped that this will prove a very useful body and help forward the game of golf in the distrirt?. The committee is of the opinon hat it would be a good move on the part of the club to equip the club-house with a rango and they respectfully make the recommendation Ito the club to that effect. It can safely be asserted that the game of golf E becoming one of the National games of New Zealand. Every year it is gaining more and more adherents. I/, 1 behoves each member of the Cromwell Club to make every endeavour fo ensure that the Crojmvpll Club upholds the legd'ng part it has always taken in the game in Otago Central and to maintain that supremacy p» *pon by which. Match committee, Messrs J. P. Parcel I, McDonald, Scheib. Wisluirt. am] Or-, Austin, ; Green committee, Messrs McDonald, J. P. Parcel I. and Scheib.

Opening day was fixed for Saturday, 18th April. The subscription was left the same as last year,

It wajj agreed that five medal matches ho played during the season, four of which are to count in the aggregate. The championship prize was left the same as last year.

Arrangements for a coach were left in the hands of Dr. Austin. Mr .J Grant offered the club a range for the club-house and the offer was accepted with thanks. Mrs Paterson was appointed to supervise the collection of ladies subscnpiioas. It was decided to adhere to the same system of handicapping as before.

A motion was carried informing the match committee that they arc not bound by the handicaps in selecting the teams.

In connection with the championship, it -was decided that the second and third medal matches bo qualifying rounds.

A motion was carried hat the president and secretaries have rower to alter time of the draw, provided that notice is given a day before (at ‘‘Argus’’ office)., but that any member can play up till 2 o clock if the secretary is notified to this effect, in order that the member may take a place in the draw. It was decided .to have visitors tickets printed, and that the charge he a voluntary one of one shilling- for iS holes. Other resolutions adopted were that all bunkers and hazards as arc recommended by the green committee be pegged off; that four medals and six balls bo donated by the < club for competition among the _ ladies. The meeting- closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
