Obituary.

Quito a gloom was cast over the Hawea and Wauaka districts when it became known that Mr John Miller, a well-known resident/, had passed iinvav with tragic suddenness at ihc ago\»r scjscj years. Ho was apparently in good health when last Sunday he made one of a party of three to sojourn into the Hunter Valley on a lishmg and hunting 1 expedition. his mates being Mr lock Kanel and Mr Lawry Johnson. All went well until Tuesday evening - when the party was engaged in cooking a meal, all.'er the activities of the day. It was then that the deceased was seen to fall from his sent in a. seizure, from which he did not rally despite the efforts of his companions at resneitatiou. His remains were laid to re.'-J.' in the Hawea Cemetery on Thrusday. Mr Miller was highly esteemed by a wide circle of acquaintances, and as might ho expected his remains were followed by a large number of mourners who turned out to pay a last tribute of respect to his memory. Mr Miller liad spent all his life in the Lakes District. He followed mining. then fanning pursuits. He was horn at Arrowtown in 1872. He received his education at the Cardrona school, and spent In’s early manhood mining in that (at the time) flourishing mining centra. In 1 goo he moved with his father 1 , and family to Mt. Barker, where he successfully carried on farming- for 23 years, along with his father and brother. They sold out of -rhe Mt. Barker property in 1023, to take up their abode at Abbotsford, where they acquired a property. The deceased, however, - lived most of his time at Hawea up to nhe time of his death. He was a son of that band of fast vanishing, hard-working, early settlers whose thrift and perseverance enabled them to surmount obstacles that the present generation has no need to contend with.
