" Alter Chains," a live thousand feet film, is the star picture in Mr Hull's pr - gramme for next Friday. It is a London Film Company's production, with Heather Thatcher as the star, aad John Astley in the opposite role. It is a story of a young lady forced to marry against her will, aud abounds with stirring dramatic scenes and presents a unique fiuish. The climax is a terrible revelation of a bad man's soul. A* feature of the supports is Charley Chaplin in " Police," while another is a scenic " Venice." On Saturday next, at Cromwell, Messrs Goodger and Co. will sell by auction the privileges in connection with the Cromwell Jockey Club's annual race l meeting of January litb and loth, 1920 The right to a publicans booth will be offered, also fruit stall and horse paddocks. This yeir the club reverts to a two-da} meeting, and in addition has offered a substantial increase in stakes. It promises to be one of the best meetings ever held in Cromwell, aud the privileges are well worth securing.

There is likely to be a revival of sports meetings throughout the Central dis» trict during the preseut season. In connection with this the ladies are already hard at work, and are making elaborate arrangements in anticipition of a big attendance on Friday The charge for admission is particularly reasonable, and we have no doubt the community will assist the ladies in their efforts on behilf of th; local institution. Mr Hazard, of the Public Works Department, win has been surveying the neck between Lakes ilavvea and Wanaki in cornection with the proposed hydro-electric sheme, left last waok for Wanganui, (writes our own correspondent) Mr Robinson is now completing the survey. It is understood that tunnelling through the neck is the now favored propos.il although the alternative scheme of a power hou->e near Luggate is also under consideration The cost of transmission lines for the electric current works out at £llOO per mile. Surveying should be completed shortly, but two months at least, arc required to deal with nutters and estimate the cost of the.scheme. Commissioner Sadd, and the members of the Otago Land Board, with the exception of Mr G. Livingstone, were in district on Thursday last, one of the matters demanding their attention being the subdivision of the Mount Pisa run. A plan of the proposed subdivision has been dratted, but the greatest obstacle at present is in getting sufheient men to carry out the survey, as so mauy runs are at present being dealt with. Commissioner Sadd, however, is hopeful of having a staff at work on the run at an early date. No definite information of the subdivision is available for publication at present, beyond the fact that a considerable area of the Hats east and west of the road is being reserved for ebser settlement at a later date.
