; [From our own Correspondent.] i Except during the past week, little growth of grain or pasture has been ! apparent, the spring just closing hav. ; ing been one of tbe coldest of recent I years. The warm weather of the past j week has made a great difference in the appearence of the fields, and with a favourable season from now on the grain returns should be well up to the average, 1 The announcement of the retirement of Sir William Fraser will be received with regret by the electors of Wakatipu, by his political opponents equally with his supporters His connection with the electorate extended over the greater portion of his life in New Zealand, and the manner in which the interests of his constituents and of the country generally were dealt with by. the retiring member has left for his successor iu the representation of Wakatipu a high ideal to follow. Few politicians held a higher place in the esteem of all, regardless of party, and, it will be the general wish of those he has served so long and faithfully that his years of retirement may be as happy as those of his public life have been useful to the country of his adoption.
