Cromwell Borough Council

The fortnightly meeting of the above, held on Thursday evening, was attended by the Mayor (Mr A. M. Brodrick), CrsOrr, Wishart, Campbell, and Jones. Minutes of last meeting were confirmed. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows : From the Treasury, Wellington, notifying that goldfields revenue, £1 10s, had been paid to the credit of the council. - -Received The Treasury also notified that I lie subsidy on the expenditure in connection with Peace Celebrations had been authorised for payment.—Received. The Eastbourne Borough Council forwarded for approval a remit urging that the 1 definition of Time Bill (Daylight Saving), be placed on the Statute Book without further delay. Arguments in favour of the remit were economy, public health, and the recent dislocation of the railway service. The council treated the remit on the linos recently indicated by the Prime Minister —that the experiment had proved a failure in other countries, and the letter was received. Another remit was from the Waihi Borough Council, in the direction of urging on the Government that by reason of the excessive price and scarcity of timber, export thereof be prohibited until local requirements are supplied.—The council supported Hie remit. Renewal of the accident policy with the Ocean Accident Company was authorised. The secretary of the Cromwell Bowling Club wrote stating that at a recent meeting of the executive the matter of forming a croquet lawn was favorably considered. The writer pointed out that this would be a big asset to the town, and the club wished to know if the council would grant an area of 22 yards by J9 yirds, north of the bowling green, for the purpose If the grant was made the club would call a meeting of residents to farther the proposal. Or Campbell supported the application, and said the lawn would be a big asset to the town. The lawn would reclaim some of the wilderness, as the area was at present* and it would be enclosed in one fence with the bowling green.

Cr Wishart seconded, and the application was granted. A letter from the Postmaster General re postmaster’s residence was receiver]. Messrs Orr and Uurrows applied for an inch tap in front of their premises in Mclmore Terrace. If this was granted they would keep the street watered during the summer months.— Cr Wishart said the' Council should erect taps if the business people would keep the streets ivatcrcd, as o lie red by the applicants, and thereby there woidd be a big improvement. The application was granted. A letter from the Otago Expansion League, with reference to hydroelectric power and the pioposed visit of delegates and the formation of committees in the various centres, was read.—-It was resolved that the council form a hydro-electric committee. An application from 11. T. Orr to rent sections Id and 11, block Id. Town of Cromwell, at an annual rental of 10s each, was granted. Uki’okts, Or Wishart ( Water Commit!ee), re ported that a good deal (if work was being done on Mount Pisa supply, including repairs to a slip in the race, and repairing leaks at the penstock, which should now be satisfactory. The main pipe line down the hill had been covered up. and the men were now engaged repairing leaks in the pipe line across the flat. The plumber was erecting the new spray further west on the line. The hospital race for (he overflow water was in very bad order, The recent damage was repaired in a couple of hours, but the race was entirely insufficient to carry the water away, and unless it was attended to the same thing would happen the next time the penstock was cleaned out. lie had informed representatives of ll)c hospital to that effect, and recommended writing to the trust on the matter. The committee had inspected the reserviur, and found everything in fairly good order, and decided not to undertake cleaning same at present. There was a dangerous slip under the first syphon in the Firewood Creek pipe line, and it seemed as if the whole hill was on the move. If it went suddenly the pipe line would he seriously damaged, and the committee recommended scenting the pipe-lino with wire ropes. t—Received.

(Jr Campbell (Works Committee), reported that the committee had inspected the water channels north and south of the sphopj residence. They recorn mended flagging the two channels, the estimated cost being £-5,. It had been found necessary to buy some posts for the hprse paddocks, the cost beipg \ Qs.--deceived-The work on tho water channels was authorised, and the committee’s act ion in purchasing posts approved. The Mayor said he had been informed that waggon horses were wandering near the sand baniers, and doing a great deal of darapge lo trees, etc - a- councillors stated that it seemed to bo quite a common occurrence for horses to be at large at nights. The Mayor replied that th° council had referred to th s piattcr pi cling after meet ing. Tin y had spent money ip making a legal pound, and they wanted a poundkeepev, There would

not bo any satisfaction until this was done. An application from the Public Works Cricket Club for the use of the Recreation ground was granted. The batik book showed a debit of £l2O Us, with temporary loans AU.jO. «• Accounts amounting to JUT 8s 6d were passed for payment. Replying to a question re sheep recently mustered for impounding, the clerk said the drover had mustered thirty-five in the streets. Eu route tc the pound he was met by one owner who took delivery of five, and promised to see him (the clerk), re expenses. A little further along the road another owner had taken the balance on the same conditions. He (the clerk) had instructed the drover to collect 2s per head on the lot. So far neither of the parties had come along. Without discussion, it was unanimously resolved that accounts for the amounts claimed be forwarded for payment forthwith, otherwise the council would take action under the by-laws,
