Cajuuck Riding

Tlio roadman rwports that tlio roads at Nevis arc it) good order. The new bridge over Sohoolhouso Creek has been completed. This work lias been carried out by the roadman. The grader completed all the work that could be done around Bannockburn. 1 hail a small gang on putting in pipe culverts and gravelling low places on the new formulation. This work is now almost completed and the roads are all in good order. Somo minor repairs are also bidng made on the Clyde-Hawksburn road. Dunstan Riding. Repairs have been carried out on the Little Valley road, and Manorburn and Alexandra-Springvalo roads. The p»rtion of the Ciyde-Cromwell road within this riding is in very fair order. Out of the £740 available 'for the Clyde-Pem-broke road I would suggest that £250 be allotted to the Clyde-Cromwell portion. This sum can bo expended in gravelling some of the worst portions of the road. Otil'KKIN'G OX Till:; RIiI'OKTS. Cr M'Cartli3' reported that some roads in the Makarora needed attention. Resolved—That the engineer attend to the matter. Cr M'Cartliy also asked that the engineer report on the llawea bridge with a view of converting it into a sleel structure for traction traliic.—To be left in the hands of the Engineer. The council then adjourned until 7 p.m. On resinning the chairman and Crs Spain and Ritchie were appointed a committee to deal with the lenders for the Luggate bridge. Cr Spain thought that the upkeep of the roads in the LHinstan Riding was costing the county too much. The Springvale, Galloway, and Alexandra roads need atlen'.ion and he had not seen anything done in the way of calling tenders for a surfaceman. He also reported that near the Halfway House Hotel there was a gravel pit which was very dangerous. It seemed absurd that the surfaceman should be expected to proceed to Cromwell ami back to do a day's work, and they could not get a day's work out of a horse that hail to travel twenty miles. The engineer reported that the gravel pit at the hotel was the only place where gravel could be procured. With regard to the Springvale Alexandra road he explained that he had been instructed to hud out the cheapest way for repairing same and not to call tenders for a surfaceman.

Cr Spain thought, a man should be procured for this road or a man should be transferred from one of the other ridings for a few mouths. The chairman thought that the boundary of the Dunstan riding should be altered.

The engineer was instructed to call tenders for keeping the road in repair. With regard to the gravel pit, Cr Spain thought that the council should not run the risk of someone falling into it and coming on the council for damages Cr Ritchie thought that there was no place on the Clyde-Cromwell road that wanted guarding—one place more than another —and that there were many rocks just as dangerous as the gravel pit and if this was fenced oil' it would be all right, It was resolved (hat. the engineer be instructed to attend to same.

It was also resolved to give; Messrs Lane auolher notice lo complete the road in Earnsclough riding or otherwise the county would have to spend the deposit. A letter was read from Dv Hyde complaining that his road had not been attended to.

Cr McCarthy explained thai it was impossible to take a load up the hill until about l'7-l had been spent in grading, but that Dr Hyde had a good road at the back of his place. Cr ltitehic moved that a road be constructed when the grader is available. |)r Hyde had a splendid road if he liked to use the to]) one. It, was the unanimous opinion of the council thai Dr Hyde was well oft m regard to the matter of roads.

The chairman explained that something would have lo be done to lessen the large expenditure, Cr Ritchie was in favor of completing l>r Hyde's, Goodger's, and Young's roads and let the others wait in the meantime and the grader be slopped. Cr Kheppard was a'so in favor of calling in the grader as they must slop the large expenditure. Cr McCarthy thought that Messrs Good gel' and Young had been very reasonable and that something should be done in regard to the road. It was resolved that alter Hyde's. Goodger's, and Young's roads are finished the grader be slopped. The engineers report was approved. The i>og Registrar reported having registered liF-5 dogs a! 2s (jd and 100 at Ids for the year-, Approve), The clerk had arranged to get dog collars from Mr Smart. Approved.

The Inspector of Nuisances reported that the sanitary condition find water supply of the town was good,—Approved, The poundkecper reported that he had impounded within the last two months IN sheep, 1, cows and lO'horsts.— Approvyd, The Council adjourned to 'J am on Wednesday. YVEDN ESJMY'S SITTING. The report of gold-rovcuue was received. The council then went into committee to deal with lender?, and inspect and pass account;-, A schedule of ace. mil* for fcl3<il 2s 2d was passed for payment. With regard to the motor on Quartz Keel' Point road, (he chairman thought a committee should be* set up to arrange with the owner oi the motor lorry or thai the council provide that a man would have to go ahead of the motor.

Cr Jameson thought that motors should not be allowed to pass more than three hours a day say 11 a.in to 2 p.m.

Cr Spain thought that the council was taking too much precaution in some places and too little in other:;. if a man went ahead of a car it would mean thai" it \yoyld have to go at a walking pace and lie could not see that anyone" could complain at this. He would like to see oilier places guarded the satue as (his road. The chairman, thought il 'lui'e ample if a nnui wau to piVi-ei-d ai i\ distance of :ruy ton chaius, Cr liitehie : " If we are going to be a progressive body we mu.t opt. u' our

roads 10 motor traffic." lie proposed ' culling ;i meeting of the people concerned to lix hours to suit the public and the owner of the motor lorry. Cr McCarthy thought that the council should allow the motor lorry to proceed round (he Quartz Reef Point road and give notice to rescind the restrictions in regard to motor traffic in the by-laws Cr McCarthy then moved—That the present by-law be rescinded at a meeting to be held on 26th March to deal with same, and a meeting of residents be called at Low burn on the afternoon of the 22nd February to consider the hours suitable.—The motion was unanimously agreed to. A sum of CI" was passed for snrill bird destruction and it was resolved to stop buying same. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Moritzson, the organiser of the tour of M.Ps. Tlie chairman expressed the opinion that the tour had done much for the county in the shape of water rights, etc. Jt was resolved to procure discs and notices marking a certain speed for motors for several dangerous roads in the county. The council then rose.
