KEPT HER FOR HIM.
Of course it was all a mistake, but it caused Newbryde a very uncomfortable five minutes. It happens that he was a member of the free library, and the cause of the misunderstanding was the regulation which allows any member wanting a certain book, provided the book is not in, to deposit a penny and secure next turn, the librarian notifying the return of the book by sending a postcard. Newbryde had been trying for weeks to secure one of Jepson’s works, and not being successful, he paid his penny in the usual way. In due course the card arrived, and Mrs Newbryde took it from the postman. This is what she read ; “Mr. Newbryde is informed that ‘The Girl He Left Behind Him* is now in the library, and will be retained for him until Saturday morning next.” It was some time before Newbryde could convince his wife that she had made an error.
