| Recently a country doctor in the I North of Ireland, a bachelor, locally 1 noted for his brusqueness and irascibility, was driving along a narrow I road, when his passage was barred j by an old woman, who was returning from the bog leading an ass, | whose panniers were filled with peat. The woman led the ass to the side of the lane as quickly as she could ; but not quick enough to please the short-tempered doctor. "Faugh I” he exclaimed, "women and asses are always in the way !” "I’m glad ye have the manners to put j ourself last,” said the woman, calmly. The doctor drove on without another word.
