Cromwell Borough Council.

A special and ordinary meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday at 8 p.m. Present —the Mayor (Mr E. Murrell) Crs. Grair, Scott, Young and Stumbles. The business of special meeting was to make and levy a general rate for the year ending 31st March 1911, of one and five pence in the pound.—This was duly proposed and carried. The minutes of last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. CoiUtESrONUEXC E. Outward was read and approved, inward read and dealt with as follows : Several letters and telegrams were read from the Spiral Steel Pipe Coy. Ltd., in connection with the order for 32 chains of six inch pipes to connect with the new seven inch main. Included in these was the following—"This will serve to confirm our telegram in reply to yours of yesterday, purs reading " Will supply pipes and fittings up lo tw'.dvc months terms carrying interest at five per cent per annum as follows —two and a half inch fire hydrants at £5 each, surface boxes KJs each, six inch stop valves !)5s each, reducing connections ;30s each, junctions for hydrants and valves fixed in position on pipes. May we proceed with making the 32 chains at 2s Sd per foot. We are now awaiting your reply and trust the offer of credit terms over a period of 12 months will meet with the approval of your council. We woidd be pleased to send a man down with the pipes to joint them up in the trenches and place all fittings in position, for his actual travelling expenses and wages at 12s per day. If you require any bends, tecs or crosses please let us know. There will bo no difficulty about the reducing pieces to connect with your cast iron pipes." The town clerk stated the works and water committee had met and decided to accept.the above offer, and he wired the Spiral Coy. to that effect. Cr Grair said there was no need to have a man sent down to do the work of laying the pipes as a competent man was available here, which was agreed t>. From Mrs Hosking asking permission to tap the main for new sections recently purchased.—Granted on usual conditions. Valuation Department and Treasury notifying that the subsidy on rates collected of £52 Ss Id, had been forwarded. —Ivcceivcd. From Stock Inspector stating the government hinds adjoining Cromwell borough endowment was now being poisoned, suggesting the council. should do theirs at the same time. —Left in the hands of the Mayor and Cr Young to act.

From Bank of New Zealand, Cromwell in reply to application for the usual overdraft limit up to £7OO, granting same on usual terms. —Received.

From Secretary, Wakatipa Licensing Committee forwarding statement of the expense of administration with details of amounts due by the various local bodies, Cromwell's proportion £7 5s 2d and asking for cheque to be forwarded.— Received and amount passed lor payment. The bank book was placed on the table and showed a debit balance of £27 2s 3d. Accounts amounting to £3O Os 8d were passed for payment. Cr Gair said he thought it was necessary to hayc the new race cleaned out so that it would be ready when wanted, lie suggested that the caretaker'be empowered to put extra labor on if required. —This was agreed to. )t was proposal and carried' that in future the council meet at eight o'clock sharp instead of at 7.30 p.m. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting.
