Football

[By Fullback.]

NEVIS V. CROMWELL. The first match of the season was played here on Saturday between the above teams, and resulted in an unexpected win for Nevis by 3 points (penalty goal) to nil. The game was very willing and tight. The Cromwell

backs made several attempts to make the game open, but the passing was mulled very badly through want of practice. The Nevis boya played a good defensive game, their taking and kicking being very sound. The first spell was very even ; Dwyer potted a splendid goal from a penalty. The local boys had the best of the game in the second spell, but several chances of scoring were badly spoilt. Mr J. Swan made a very efficient referee, his decisions not being questioned. There will be a practice on the local ground on Wednesday. Players are requested to take advantage of the moonlight nights for training. R. Payne, who was playing for Upper Clutha last year, is now a member of the Albion Club, Christchurch, and was singled out for j special mention for his play last week. D. C. Jolly received a nasty kick on

the forehead in the match last Saturday, resulting in a slight concussion of the brain, but on enquiry to-day I am informed that he is progressing favorably. The first flag match of the season will be played at Bannockburn on Saturday next between Cromwell and Bannockburn and a good game is expected.
