KRUGER'S GOLD.

BURIED TREASURE UNEARTHED IN THE TRANSVAAL.

A cousin of General Kemp, has discovered beyond Spehiniam buried treasure, removed from ;>• i.oria before Lord Robert's entry. The value of the find is estimated at a quarter of a mill ion sterling, of which the Government will rea-ive half. Another correspondent says the treasure consists of GO.OOOoz. of gold and coin. The question as to what became of the Transvaal Governments treasure was one of the unsolved mysteries of the South African War. When Mr. Kruger left Pretoria prior to the entry of Lord Robert's army ho is said to have taken in his special train the archives of the Transvaal, as, well as a vast quantity of gold and coin and bullion from the Pretoria Mint, the value of which has been variously estimated at from £2,000,000 to £0,000.000. A story was current shortly before the ex-President sailed that the goid had been sent on to Europe in advance by way of Madagascar. To ensure safety it was said that he had shipped it in small quantities to the island, thence to be sent to European banks. Altogether it was stated he had shipped off £2,000,000 sterling in this manner, besides a quantity of diamonds, the whole amount being j transmitted in his wife's maiden I name. The fact that the President ! died leaving a fortune of between j £750,000 and £1,000,000 sterling j shows that he must have carried off ia very considerable sum. Spelonken, where this discovery has been made, is a gold-mining district 80 miles from Pietersburg, the chief town in the Northern Transvaal.
