SPORTING

[By “The Fly.”J

Our £7O trot seems a very open race yet. The “great pet” mare, May, has been put down at Gore in the two and one mile trots. Beware won at Oamaru, but was disqualified for wrong entry. W hat this wrong entry means, from the meagre accounts.l have read, lam unable to say. It may interfere with her entry in this district. The Derby candidates, as far as I am able to state, with the exception of Mr Chapman’s colt, are doing well, and I think we will have a good acceptmce when the day comes. I was sorry to hear that Messrs M'Naughtou and Thompson had lost their colt Moutere. It was my candid opinion, had this half brother to the Wizard come to the post, that he would have made things hum. The New Zealand Cup seems to be the only topic here at present, and there are all sorts of rumors current concerning this race—viz., horses being lamed, etc. Euroclydon is supposed to have Oeen very sore, hut, by latest accounts, the eoreuess stems to be going off him. Day Star seems to be lame at walking or trotting but g dlops soundly. Notwithstanding all the lameness of these cracks, there is a likelihood of them having a big say at the finish, if they come to the post lit and well. Now there are 25 nominations for this race, and, as the final acceptances are not yet in, it is a difficult matter for me to give my tip. I will take with the two mentioned, Lady Zetland, Defiance, and Stead’s representative, and I think out of the five we will find the winner.
