BANNOCKBURN NOTES.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Mining news is very scarce at Bannockburn. The frost being so hard at nights, the water cannot be brought in. There is very little water in the creeks as yet, and until the snow begins to melt there will not be much work. A good many travel down to the river prospecting, but with very little success. The Kawarau, like Bannockburn, is no good for fossicking, everything wants to be done on a wholesale style. The dredge has taken up its position at the foot uf the Bannockburn creek and started work, with what results can hardly be said for a few weeks. If they strike gold at once they will be very lucky, as all the river is not paved with gold, as some seem to think. Mr De La Pecelle, of Lake County Press, was round canvassing for subscribers, as it is his intention, so he led us to understand, of enlarging his paper, making it even a larger sheet than the Cbomwell Argus, which is the best paper on the goldfields, though some do call it, in goldfields’ parlance, the “ Cromwell Rag.” What I am going to say now may seem heresy, but it is the generally expressed opinion here, and that is “ The Pirates of Penzance ” could not compare with either “The Mikado” or “Trial by Jury,” the performers, with three or four exceptions, not being able to lose their individuality, but the exceptions were really good. I suppose I must not name them, although I should wish to. Not being a critic myself I am giving the opinion of all that I have spoken to on this subject. By the by can you tell what the funds are for, or does it all go in expenses, if so, is it not rather a severe tax upon the district for the pleasure of a few.
