NEVIS.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Nevis, May 20, 3895. There is every appearance of an early and hard winter, and the miners here are hurrying on the wash up for the autumn; some fair though not sensational returns have been recorded. Robertson and party had a rather serious break in their race of Friday. They have had a series of mishaps in connection with this claim during the the summer. I am glad to say Mr A. M'Aulay is getting about again with the aid of a stick. Williamson and party are pretty well finished with what luck your deponent knoweth not. The lately amalgamated claim, W. and 0. Masters and W. Adie and sons, have their plant erected, and judging by the amount of debris discharged on to the flat, should soon have a tale to tell. Mr JR. Girdwood is on a grand patch, having picked up some soz of the precious metal in a few minutes last week, after a short flush of water; all rough gold. The late reported 9 or lOoz nugget turns out to be a bit of exaggeration, it now appears to resolved itself into lTdvvts. The Pactolus at the Upper Nevis, is about to close for the winter, they have been rather reticent about their winnings, which is not always a bad sign. Our school is opened again under the recently appointed teacher, who is entitled to congratulations for winning the position under the rather heavy handicap of being put third on the list of recommendations by our local committee. You see, Mr Editor, we are great free traders, and don't believe in protection in any form. Our library is in a rather comatose state, there being only some 8 or 9 subscribers, and the committee are rather in a fix to know how to "raise the wind." The library building is in a serious state of delapidation, and needs repairs at once even to keep the snows of winter from destroying the books. Oh ! for some generous donor of 20 or £3O sterling. Our spiritual teachers have bidden us good-bye for the winter months, our climate being too rigorous during the three winter mouths ; but the vendors of spirituous supplies expect to do more trade as the external cold needs to be counteracted by internal warmth. Rabbiting is now about to commence in earnest.. A good many of our miners do a little at this during the months when king frost sets up his rei^n.
