London, May 23. The cricket match between Australia and 18 of Longsight is concluded. The latter in second innings scored 106. The Australians won by 10 wickets. Spofforth in the second innings of the Longsight team took eight wickets. The Great Powers have come to an understanding and written a letter to Turkey in regard to the uon-execution of the Treaty of Berlin so far as it relates to Greece and Montenegro. The Powers threaten a European conference to be held at Berlin in July, failing a speedy settlement of existing differences.

Sir A. Clark will accompany the Marquis of Ripori to India at his special request. The collection of pictures the London Commission is sending to Melbourne, although limited in number is of first-class merit.

At a meeting of the Catholic Union in London, the Duke of Norfolk presented Cardinal Newman with a salver subscribed for in Sydney and made from Australian gold. The Cardinal replied, warmly thanking his Australian friends. Thirty thousand operatives have struck work atßlackburn.

The famine in the provinces of Persia, owing to the failure of the late harvest and oppressive system of government, is daily extending. The rural population is left without the means of subsistence. There has been 600 deaths from starvation.

critical, and by latest intelligenpe there is very little hope entertained of hep recovery. Bradlaugh has addressed a written protest to the House of Commons against the decision of the select committee in his case a3 to taking the oath. (The question ia exciting considerable interest.

The strikes among operatives at Blackburn and Oldham is assuming grave proportions, and will greatly interfere with trade. Several mills are closed, and thousands are out of employment. Much disquiet is occasioned by the state of affairs in Turkey, which it is feared will lead to the re-opening of the Eastern question. The Albanians offered forcible resistance to the attempts by Montenegro to occupy the territory ceded by the Treaty of Berlin. Acting under pressure from the Great Powers, the Grand Vizier exerted his utmost authority to prevent further conflict between Albania and Montenegro, but up to the present without success.

Goschen has been instructed to proceed to the principal European Courts in order to confer with the Powers upon the position of affairs. He will visit Paris, Berlin, and Vienna.

Great indignation is expressed in Ireland owing to the proposal of Government to have recourse to coercive measures for dealing with political agrarian agitators. Home rule meetings have been held denouncing the renewal system of repression contemplated, and violent attacks are made upon the Ministry by the national Press. The authorities remain firm, and intend to prosecute flagrant instances of seditious language.

Intelligence has been received of a serious defeat inflicted npon the Chilians. While advancing upon Moqueque they were entrapped into an ambuscade and outnumbered ; having to fight at a disadvantage they were defeated with heavy loss. The feeling of irritation between Austria and England caused by Gladstone's indictment of the Austrian policy has been allayed by explanation offered to Austria by the Premier. Austria is prepared to co-operate with England in any measure calculated to bring about a satisfactory settlement of Turkish affairs.

The Home rule member systematically press upon the Imperial Government the redress of Irish grievances. Intelligence has been received at Madrid of a serious outbreak in Cuba.
