DtJNEDiN, May 25, 12.13 p.m. THE DUNEDIN RACES.
. The weather here yesterday was fine. 4000 persons were present at the Races. The result of the various events were as follows :—Hurdle Race—Marie Antoinette, 1; Black Bess, 2 ; Romance, 3. There was £66 in the totalisator, £4 of which was on the winner.
Maiden Plate—Playboy, 1 ; Nautilus, 2 ; Concrete, 3. £l6l on totalisator, £3l being on the winner.
Birthday Handicap—Adamant, 1 ; Titania, 2 ; York,' 3. £173 in totalisator, £29 of which was on the winner.
Trotting Race—Donald, 1; Bella, 2 ; Keefoozlem, 3. Novel Race—Sir William, 1; Concrete, 2 ; Maude, 3. £9l in totalisator, £l3 on the winner.
Tradesmen's Handicap Adamant, 1; York, 2; Blue Peter, 3. £l6O in totalisator, £37 on the winner.
The Consolation Handicap was won by York.
At the Grand National meeting (Christchurch,) the attendance was good. The Grand National Steeplechase Handicap resulted in—Agent, 1; Royalty, 2 ; Baron, 3. 12 starters. The betting was 2to I against Agent, and sto 1 against the rest. The race was won by a length after a splendid contest. Time, lOmin. 39secs. The totalisator's price was 4 and 5| to 1 against the winner. Maiden—Venture, 1 ; Stella, 2 ; Clarence, 3. Hunt Club Cup—Agent, 1; Grey Momus, 2. Eight starters, won easily ; time, 7min. 14|secs. Consolation—Clarence, 1; Royalty, 2. At Tapanui the Birthday Handicap result was—Merry bird, 1; Atlantic, 2. The Hurdle Race was won by Sultan and the Novel by Mountain Boy. A man, name unknown, was killed to-day on the Anderson's Bay railway. A suspicious fire has taken place at Port Chalmers. The premises of Robert Bacon, bootmaker, insured for £3OO in the Australian Alliance Co. were destroyed. The Waimea Plains railway was completed yesterday.
Private cablegrams have been received at Sydney from America containing information that Hanlon has formally agreed to row Trickett on the Thames in November next for the Sports7nan , s Cup and stakes. Trickett starts for England immediately. A. meeting has been called for the purpose of providing funds. It is probable his brother William will accompany him. At Auckland, Sarah Bostock, sentenced to six months imprisonment for smuggling jewellery from Home, has been released, being pardoned by the Governor. William Kempsaw, a miller, was killed on the Wellington-Greytown railway yesterday. He was intoxicated, and fell asleep on the platform. James Gilchrist, engineer, of Wellington, was accidentally shot at the Upper Hutt yesterday through his companion's gun exploding. Invercargill won the football match against Dunedin.
At Oamaru there is no prospect of either Jones or Roberts retiring from the election.
