RETURN CRICKET MATCH.

MARRIED V. SINGLE. The return match between the two elevens of the local Club—Married v. Single—took place on Thursday afternoon. The event did not create so much interest as the first contest, at least up to the time of commencing the game ; but when the bachelors went to the wickets to the bowling of Messrs Preshaw and Amoore it soon became evident that each party was «' going in to win." The '' youths" were pretty confident of success, albeit they had not on this occasion the services of the best all-round player in the Club, Tobin ; still, their victory over the Benedicts last mutch was so easily achieved that they felt justified in fancying they would score another win, notwithstanding the absence of their leader —whose place on this occasion was well filled by Mr Jenkinson. Mr Preshaw was captain of the Benedicts. The Singles were sent to the wickets, and for an hour and ahalf led their opponents a merry dance, as is indicated by the tally of 72. During this innings the married men showed a great improvement on their previous form, and some fair fielding was shown, especially in the way of some very clever catches. The respectable total of their first innings " rose the youthful spirits high," and their opponents went to defend the sticks amid a good deal of quiet chaff. The first five Benedicts were disposed of for 22, and things were looking rather ominous ; but the stand of Messrs Tippet and Fergus saved defeat, those gentlemen totting up nearly 60 between them. This innings closed for 109, and the hopes of the "old 'uns" rose proportionately. No time was lost in sending the single men again to the stumps, Preshaw and Amoore bowling. After the retirement of Jenkinson and Bradbury for four each, the timber fell thick and fast, the bowlers being well on the wicket and the fielding very active. All out for 17 being called, left the married side a victory greater even than their previous defeat—having beat their opponents in one innings, with 20 runs to spare.
