MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

An adjourned meeting of the Town Council was held on Friday evening, at which all the members were present, with the exception of Crt Grant and Aitken. Minute* of previous meeting having been read, CORRESPONDENCE -was considered. The outward consisted of letter ordering hose for Fire Brigade in accordance with resolution passed at previous meeting; and to Messrs Barr and Oliver, ordering service pipes for conveying the water upon private premises. The correspondence was approved. A communication was read from Mr Under-Secretary Willis, acknowledging receipt of copy of bye-laws adopted Tjy Board of Wardens, and pointing out that the local Board had no power to impound' from off the commonage, but if they applied to the Waste Lands Board, and nameli a reliable person, no doubt power would be granted him to impound.—The letter was referred to the Board of Wardens, and it was resolved that a meeting of the same be convened for that night fortnight, 25th instant, at which Mr Thomson be requested to attend.* MEMORIAL FOR MAGISTRATE. The Mayor laid on the table copy of memorial for a Resident Magistrate and Warden for Cromwell district, as drawn up by the sub-committee appointed for that purpose. It read 118 under : 'To life Honor the Superintendent and Executive Council of the Province of Otago. The prayer of the uniersigned, merchants, •miners and residents generallyof the district of Cromwell, humbly sheweth. 1. That the Cromwell district has for some back, and is inow, making rapid advancemerit as a mining and'commercial'centre ; and is •generally recognised aa the most prosperous and tpermauerit goldfield'in the Province of Otago. 2. That this fact may be fully borne out beyond dispute., your petitioners respectfully request your Honor and your colleagues to refer *to the gold statistics of the Province, from which it will be seen that in the produce of gold the Cromwell district far outstrips any other district m Otago. 3. That as a consequence of this productiveness, a very large'number of minors and others have been attracted to the Cromwell district, a great proportion 'of whom have settled and permanently fixed their homes therein. 4. That, resulting from said prosperity and increase of a fixed population, it is found that the present arrangement of the Resident Magistrate's and Warden's Court business being transacted by a weekly visitation from a R.M. and Warden, is inadequate to the requirements of the district, and prejudical to the interests of those most in need of that officer's services, viz.: the iminers.

5. That, from its central position—surrounded as it is by the important divisions of Bannock* 'burn, Carrick Range, Kawarau Gorge, and Nevis on the one side; fiendigo, Lowburn, and the various tributaries of - the Olutha River on the other ; as well as the important district of Cardrona, which is within a distance of twenty miles from Cromwell. Town—your petitioners with confidence claim to have the favorable consideration of your Honor and colleagues. 6. That, looking at the facts above stated—which could be largely augmented did your petitioners consider it necessary to strengthen their claim—your petitioners respectfully urge upon your Honor's Government the necessity of appointing a Resident Magistrate and Warden for the CromWell district, feeling assured that the justice of conceding their prayer will force itself upon the attention of your Honor's Government. And your petitioners will, as in duty bound, ever pray, &c. After some discussion on the subject, the memorial was adopted, and the Mayor, with Crs Taylorand Arndt, appointed a Committee to gee that the petition be properly drafted, and to take the steps necessary for its being circulated throughout the district for signature. KEPORT. A report was read from the Legislative Committee respecting the Crown Grants for Municipal Reserves, in which it was recommended that all the grants be lifted as soon as ready, and that a Bill be submitted to the •General Assembly during next session vesting the reserves in the Council. The report was approved, and it was agreed to confer with Mr Pyke, M. H.R. for the district, on the matter when the proper time .arrived. ACCOUNTS. Accounts from Mr F. J. Wilson (£7 14s) Hallenstein and Co: (£2 6s) and Bark Chung, repairing race (£6 ss) were passed for payment. REGULATIONS. In compliance with instructions from a former meeting, the Clerk now submitted draft of Regulations under Corporation Byelaws. The Mayor explained that those formerly made had been rendered nugatory owing to the Bye-laws being declared illegal. Now that the Bye-laws had been legalised, it was necessary that Regulations under them should be made. The Regulations, after amendment, were approved, and the Clerk instructed to take the necessary proceedings for bringing them into operation. NEVIS BRIDGE. The Mayor informed the Council that he had been asked by the most prominent residents at Nevl3 whether this Municipality would lend its influence to get the Government to proceed with the Nevis Bridge at once. The work was badly wanted and had been provided for on the Estimates ; but there did not seem any probability of its being finished before the end of the financial year. —Crs Taylor, Talboys and Arndt were appointed to confer with the District Engineer on the matter.
