A very enjoyable .social evening was held in Somerville's ibarn on the 15thinst. for the purpose of making a presentation to tMiss 'Benshaw, who has resigned' from the position of teacher ftt tho Waitapeka School, where she baa been stationed for the past five and fc-foalf years. The evening was 6pen>t With songs and musical items and dancing, the following contributing to the programme:—Misses E. Ayson and ©iehards and 'Messrs R. Ayson and Caldwell. During-an interval Mr J. A. Bomerrille, on 'behalf of the residents of the district, presented Miss Renshaw with a well-filled purse, and spoke of Jier many good qualities and the excellent work she had done, during her tenfire of the position of local teacher. Miss Renshaw suitably replied. Messrs W. M. fiolbertson and W. »L. Somerville capalbly officiated as M.€.'s for the dance which concluded a happy little function, excellent music Ibeing supplied Iby Mrs J. Murray (violin), Miss Diehards and Mr Robertson (piano). The annual school break-up took place on the 16th inst., when there was ft good attendance of scholars and parent#. Mr W. Sutherland (chairman of the school committee) presided, and in A few appropriate remarks referred to the excellent ropert which the school had secured for the year, reflecting great credit on teacher and scholars. He them called on Miss Renshaw to present the prizes. Mr A. S. Malcolm, M.P., Bev. W. R, 'Hume and Mr L. J. Munfitt also spoke, endorsing the chairman's remarks. An opportunity was taken to present the teacher (Miss (Renshaw) with a silver inkwell, the presentation 'being made on 'behalf of the pupils toy iMisses Hurring and Hawley, assisted by Master Jim Beattie. Afterwards Mr A. S. Malcolm-addressed the gathering 'before the roll of honour, and spoke in terms appropriate te the occasion, at the conclusion of which he called on Miss 'Renshaw to perform the unveiling ceremony. The roil of honour is a neat lithographed scroll (bearing photographs of the deceased soldiers and a full list of the names of all eXtpupils who enlisted from the district. ®ev. W. R. Hume also made a few remarks. Afternoon tea was then lhanded round and concluded the function.

A meeting of the local 'branch of the Fanners' Union was,held on the 18th inflt., when there were present Messrs B. M. Tweed (chairman), J. A. SoiuerVille, W. 01. Robertson, Ayson ißolbertson, W. J. 'Alurfitt, 'M. Fletcher, G. B. Cook, W. 'Beattie and P. J. Bassett. The chief 'business was the hearing of the chairman 's Teport on the- recent conference at Balclutha in connection with the formation of a. sub-provincial district and other matters. Considerflibite discussion followed, and much was Bald albout the necessity for a reorganisation of the whole Union.
