The Clutha Leader. BALCLUTHA: FRIDAY, JULY 14.

Several members of the 16th Reinforcements arrived at Balclutha last evening on final furlough. -Mr George Thomson, North Balclutha, has taken over the carrying business of Mr Robert Murdoch.

At Tuesday's sitting of the Balclutha -Magistrate's Court a, prohibition order was granted against a local resident on his own application. The action for libel which was heard at Tuesday's sitting of the Balclutha Magistrate's Court is the first libel case which has been ventilated in the local court.

We understand that the bakery and confectionery business which has been carried on for the past nine years by Messrs Ritchie Bros, has changed hands, Mr Tamblyn. 0 f Roxburgh, being the purchaser.

It is surely adding insult to injury when a cyclist who was riding on a footpath a few days ago with a delightful disregard for the borough by-laws collided with the chief citizen of the town. The Mayor was walking quietly alongreading his paper when the collision occurred, the offender being a schoolbov, and Mr Stewart received a shock both to nerves and dignity.

Most people with a proper idea of thrift will agree that a sewing machine is an absolute necessity iu a well-regu-lated household, but a wituess in a case heard at Tuesday's sitting of the Balclutha Magistrate's Court stated that in his opinion a sewing machine was an unnecessary piece of furniture, as it was a luxury. The same witness later in the proceedings described his seaside cottage as a seaside '' resort.''

iu the libel action heard at the Magistrate's Court (Balclutha) on Tuesday, before Mr IT. A. Young, S.M., the magistrate asked if there was any connection between clauses (b) and' (c) in the statement of claim. The smile which went round the court was distinctly audible, and the humour of the remark can be readily understood when it is meutibned that clause (b) referred to an agreement about milk, and clause (c) to one about water, the magistrate evidently being doubtful whether the village pump was necessary to increase the milk supply. In the action for libel heard at Tuesday's sitting of the Balclutha Magistrate's Court, plaintiff's wife complained that someone had been stealing her hens' eggs, and she decided to place a letter in the nest which had been receiving the unwelcome attention of the purloiner. The following were the contents of the epistle: "You dirty, disreputable, mean, deceitful scum 'of the earth. You were watched robbing this nest. What do you think of yourselves? What can you think of yourselves robbing little children of their dinners for the sake of getting a few paltry eggs'? You will find these disgusting actions will not pay you, so just take care what vou are about."

I At Tuesday's sitting of the Balclutha j Magistrate's Court an affiliation case was called, but on the application of counsel was allowed to stand over until the rest of the business had been completed. On the case being- called again it was announced that it had been set'tled out of court, and it was therefore struck out. It transpired that the parties to the dispute had .arrived at the conclusion that it would be better to face their fu'ture troubles together, and with this end in view had journeyed to Kaitangata, where they had been married. As showing that the young couple had not allowed the grass to grow under their feet, it might be mentioned that a 'telegram arrived at the court 'before the conclusion of the afternoon sitting (shortly after 4 o'clock) announcing ■that the marriage ceremony had been performed. "Extra! Special! All about the War! Paper!" Do what you will you cannot lesist the temptation to buy the paper thrust before you, though you know already that it is to read again a tale already twice told.
